2024 Top Titles: Australia, Canada, the UK, and New Zealand

January 24, 2025

We recently posted the 2024 Top Titles for US Public libraries, based on the thousands of libraries that use Syndetics Unbound to add covers, summaries, recommendations and more.

Below are the top titles for Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and a new addition, New Zealand. For Canada we’ve also added a “bar chart race,” tracking the top book day by day.

While Syndetics Unbound has many dozens of libraries in all these countries, we do not have thousands, as in the United States. This makes the data more noisy and less reliable as an indicator of what’s popular across all the libraries within a country. While the lists are generally unsurprising—Sarah J. Maas and Rebecca Yarros are global phenomena—there are definitely a few titles here that caused us to ask “how did that get on there?” But there are an equal number where we asked that question, and then found the titles on country-specific bestseller lists from Whitcouls, Waterstones and Amazon. So enjoy—but take it with a grain of salt.

Canada

Enjoy the race!

Canada’s first four titles are the same as the United States’. As in Australia, Atomic Habits ranks high on consistent interest, beating out all the other books that come and go; Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone enjoys a similar status. Louise Penny, author of The Grey Wolf, is Canadian.

Australia

The Australian list is marked by two books by Trent Dalton and one by Pip Williams, both Australian authors. Dervla McTiernan, born in Ireland, is also an Australian citizen. Atomic Habits being on top is a surprise, and may be a statistical anomaly. But it appears in Amazon’s Australian bestsellers, was on the 2023 list and, while not on top in any given month, it maintained a constant level of interest that adds up across twelve months.

The absence of Kristin Hannah’s The Women from the UK list is notable, but it’s not in the current top 100 at Waterstones or Amazon now either.

New Zealand

New Zealand was not part of our data last year, so its 2024 list is entirely new. Many books that appeared in other countries’ 2023 lists, such as A Court of Thorns and Roses and Atomic Habits, now show similar popularity among New Zealand readers. Some recurring international hits, like Colleen Hoover’s It Ends with Us, appear once again, matching trends seen in other regions last year. Emily Perkins is the only New Zealand author in the top 20.
